Fall Dog-friendly Guide to Stowe, Vermont

  1. Ruth L says:

Hi, I take my golden often to this area. Near downtown Stowe, there is the Quiet Path where dogs can roam leash free and wade in the mountain-fed stream. If there is not a guard at the Waterbury reservoir (I think they officially close sometime during mid-October), it’s a lovely lake and a shortish walk partially around the edge. I’ve read there’s a more extensive trail there but when you hear gunshots on the other side of the lake, that’s a no explore zone for me. Traveling north from Stowe, there’s another Insta-worthy spot called The Red Bridge, which is just that (covered red bridge). If you travel right after you’ve taken your pics (of course) you’ll go through a winding road by a brook and out to a golf course which in 2023 mid-October was beautiful. Also, if you were to travel right (up the mountain from “haunted” Emily’s bridge) for about a mile, on the left you will see a red historic barn and amazing mountain view. It’s a pic I like in any season and weather! Scenic 100 has fantastic foliage, and a few other places I like are Calvin Coolidge estate (you can roam the grounds and go in the school house and carriage house with a dog (but not the main house)), dogs are allowed in both VT Country Stores (Rockingham and Weston – Weston is lovely in the winter!) Fort Nbr 9 (may be NH?) dogs can roam the grounds and depending on who you ask go in the buildings, too! If you’re a chocolate addict like me, no dogs but slip into LA Burdick in Walpole, NH or I’m addicted to the Lake Champlain chocolates small batch ice cream (Waterbury- I know B&J is right there but I can get that in my grocery store lol) Back to dogs, if you’re a horse lover like me, dogs are allowed on the UVM Morgan farm, and reportedly in the VT Teddy Bear place and VT Flannel stores as well as several craft breweries. We’ve also been on the Stowe gondola (although I think I enjoy that more than my dog. You can also take it in the winter as long as you don’t get off (no dogs on ski trails in other words.) I’m mad that Von Trapp has made it impossible to walk their grounds with a dog, although no one has said anything about walking down the road to see the furry cows on the campus. The road to the maple house is gorgeous! (But now inaccessible unless you buy a pass and no dogs) Part of their forest is open to the public and dogs allowed – but it is not in the main hotel area and since there are a lot of other options… whew! Thought I’d share as I might hit some of your places (again) tomorrow! (Love Grafton cheese too – but again quick in and out cause no dogs!)
