A Dog-friendly Stay at Getaway Big Bear

This content was captured during a sponsored stay at Getaway

Getaway is all about making more time for free time. With several locations an easy drive from major cities, Getaway’s tiny cabins are a window into nature—giving you the time and space to rest and disconnect with the whole family - even the furry ones.

The closest outpost to us is Getaway Big Bear and we’ve visited once in the winter and once in the summer.

Nestled in the serene woods of the San Bernardino Mountains, Getaway Big Bear is actually located in Running Springs, CA. The cabins are dog-friendly, so your dog can join you for a relaxing retreat in the woods. With plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, such as hiking trails and nearby lakes, your dog will have a blast exploring the great outdoors. This outpost offers sweeping views of the San Bernardino mountains - ideally seen from the Mountain View cabins - and endless scenic spots to explore around Arrowhead and Big Bear Lakes.

how to get to getaway big bear

To reach Getaway Big Bear from major cities in California, several routes are available depending on your starting point. If you're coming from Los Angeles, the most direct route is via I-10 East to CA-210 East, followed by CA-330 North, which will take you straight into the heart of Big Bear. The drive typically takes about two hours, making it an ideal destination for a weekend escape. From San Diego, you can take I-15 North to CA-210 East, then follow the same route as from Los Angeles. This drive usually takes around three hours. If you're traveling from San Francisco, expect a longer journey of approximately seven to eight hours via I-5 South to CA-58 East, and then onto CA-247 South before merging onto CA-18 North towards Big Bear. The drive from all destinations is relatively easy, but the last 20 minutes or so could cause some car sickness as you climb the mountain into the Outpost.

booking your getaway cabin

You can visit their website to check availability at your desired location and use HELLORUBY for $25 off your booking. This code can also be stacked with other deals. The price per night varies quite a bit based on a weekday or weekend stay, location, and season. The Big Bear location we stayed at spans $200-$500/night and has a 2-night minimum with a $50 pet fee.

What’s inside the Getaway Tiny Cabin

The inside of the tiny cabin has everything you need and nothing you don’t. You can sleep soundly on a queen bed (or queen bunk) with the comfiest pillows. The tiny home is equipped with A/C and heat, a landline by the bedside, and a large window so nature is always in view. There are window coverings that you can close whenever you’d like some extra privacy or once it gets dark. There is also no Wi-Fi on the property, but we did have cell service.

Cooking your favorite camping meals is easy with the cabin kitchenette equipped with a two-burner stove, mini-fridge, dishware, cookware, dog bowls and treats, and coffee and tea (for a small fee). And you don’t have to worry about any dark, late-night treks to a separate bathhouse because your tiny cabin comes equipped with a full, private bathroom.

Beyond the amenities, I was impressed with the layout of the cabin. You’ll want to pack light but there’s a place to put everything like coats, leashes, shoes, and your suitcases. If you prefer sleeping with several bedding layers, I would recommend packing a blanket in the winter months.

What’s outside the getaway tiny cabin

Each cabin site has designated parking spots, a fire pit set up with a grill grate for cooking (or propane grill if there’s a fire ban in place), a picnic table and chairs, a yard leash for your dog, plus firewood or charcoal and a fire starter for purchase. Each cabin site is spread out around the property to ensure a quiet, serene environment for all guests with your neighbors barely in view.

Forest view cabins vs Mountain View cabins

At Getaway Big Bear, guests can choose from a variety of cabin options that cater to different preferences, whether you're seeking a secluded retreat in the woods or a scenic spot with breathtaking views. The "One-Bedroom Cabin" is ideal for solo travelers or couples and includes one queen-sized bed. For those traveling with family or friends, the "Two-Bedroom Cabin" offers more space with two queen-sized beds, accommodating up to four guests.

Getaway Big Bear also provides unique cabin locations to enhance your stay. Guests can opt for a "Forest View Cabin," which offers a serene, wooded setting perfect for immersing yourself in nature, or a "Mountain View Cabin," which features stunning vistas of the surrounding peaks, adding a picturesque backdrop to your getaway.

We’ve stayed in both locations and truly enjoyed both, but there is something a little extra special about waking up and watching the sun come over the mountains.

oupost property amenities

On-site you'll find an expansive, 1-mile hiking trail that winds through the natural landscape of cedar, oak, and eucalyptus trees, and a quiet pond where herds of deer are known to make an appearance. You can also walked the paved roads throughout the property and you’ll find several dog stations throughout with doggie bags and trashcans.

The property itself is very peaceful, and you’ll only see staff if you need something. You can communicate with them through their text service.

what about bears?

It’s not common for bears to be in this area, but if they do surface they are likely to be black bears that are easily spooked. We didn’t see any wildlife during our stays, but it’s always good to be mindful of following safety protocols to ensure you’re not attracting wildlife - like storing food outside or in your car.

Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails

Big Bear Lake is a hiker's paradise, especially for those who love to explore the great outdoors with their furry companions. The area is home to numerous dog-friendly hiking trails, each offering its own unique scenery and experience.

  1. Pine Knot Trail: One of the most popular trails in the area, Pine Knot Trail is a moderate, 6.9-mile round trip that leads you through the beautiful San Bernardino National Forest. The trail starts at the Aspen Glen Picnic Area and winds through dense forests of Jeffrey pine and white fir, providing plenty of shade for you and your dog. Along the way, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Big Bear Lake and the surrounding mountains. The trail culminates at Grand View Point, where you can enjoy panoramic vistas of San Gorgonio Mountain and beyond. Dogs are welcome on this trail as long as they are kept on a leash.

  2. Castle Rock Trail: For a shorter yet more challenging hike, Castle Rock Trail is a fantastic option. This 2.6-mile round trip trail is a steep climb, but the reward at the top is well worth the effort. As you ascend, you and your dog will pass through lush forests and cross over rocky outcrops. The trail ends at Castle Rock, a large granite boulder formation that offers sweeping views of Big Bear Lake. The terrain can be a bit rugged, so make sure both you and your dog are up for the challenge.

  3. Cougar Crest Trail: If you're looking for a longer hike with your dog, consider the Cougar Crest Trail. This 4.6-mile trail (one way) starts near the Big Bear Discovery Center and gradually climbs through a variety of ecosystems, from chaparral to pine forests. The trail intersects with the Pacific Crest Trail, offering opportunities for even more exploration if you're feeling adventurous. The views along the way are spectacular, especially as you get closer to Bertha Peak, where you can see the entire Big Bear Valley. Dogs must be on a leash on this trail as well, but they will love the fresh mountain air and chance to explore new terrain.

Dogs are welcome on the trail, making it an excellent option for a leisurely walk with your four-legged friend.

  5. Alpine Pedal Path: For a more relaxed and less strenuous outing, the Alpine Pedal Path is a great option. This paved path is approximately 3.2 miles long and runs along the north shore of Big Bear Lake. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride with your dog. The path is mostly flat and offers beautiful views of the lake, as well as opportunities to spot local wildlife. Several picnic spots along the way make it easy to stop for a break and enjoy the scenery.

Just a short drive from Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead offers even more opportunities for adventure and exploration. This picturesque alpine lake is surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest and is known for its crystal-clear waters and charming mountain village atmosphere.

The village also hosts various events throughout the year, such as outdoor concerts and farmers' markets, making it a lively place to visit.

  2. Arrowhead Queen Tour Boat: For a unique way to experience Lake Arrowhead, consider taking a ride on the Arrowhead Queen Tour Boat. This narrated boat tour takes you around the lake, providing fascinating insights into the history and natural beauty of the area. While dogs are not allowed on the boat, it’s a fun activity for human visitors and offers a great opportunity to learn more about the lake and its surroundings.

  3. Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails in Lake Arrowhead: If you’re looking for more dog-friendly hiking opportunities, Lake Arrowhead has several trails that are worth exploring. The Will Abell Memorial Trail is a 2-mile loop that offers beautiful views of the lake and surrounding forest. It’s a relatively easy hike, making it perfect for a leisurely outing with your dog. Another great option is the North Shore National Recreation Trail, a 4-mile trail that winds through the forest and offers stunning views of Lake Arrowhead and the San Bernardino Mountains.

  4. Lake Gregory Regional Park: Just a short drive from Lake Arrowhead, Lake Gregory Regional Park is another great spot for outdoor fun. The park features a dog-friendly walking trail that loops around the lake, as well as designated dog swim areas where your pup can cool off in the water. In addition to hiking and swimming, Lake Gregory offers picnic areas, fishing, and even a water park during the summer months, making it a great destination for a day trip with your dog.
