A Perfect Day in Carmel with Your Dog
Carmel-by-the-Sea, a charming coastal town in California, is an ideal destination for dog lovers. With its dog-friendly beaches, scenic drives, delightful eateries, and pet-centric shops, Carmel ensures both you and your furry friend have a memorable outing. There’s so much to do in Carmel with your dog that it can be tough deciding what to do if you only have a day to explore. That’s why we’ve created this guide of all our favorite activities for having the perfect day. This guide covers a full-day of fun around Carmel, but can be easily adjusted based on the time you have while you’re in the area.
Morning Delights: Coffee and Donuts
Start your day at Carmel Coffee House, a quaint little spot that serves some of the best coffee in town. As you order your morning brew, you'll be greeted by the friendly baristas who often have treats ready for canine visitors. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee pairs perfectly with the charming, dog-friendly vibe of this coffee house and you can tell it’s a local favorite.
Just a short walk away, Dutch Door Donuts is your next stop in Carmel Plaza. Known for their mouthwatering donuts, this spot offers a variety of flavors that will satisfy your morning sweet tooth. I dream about these donuts and will absolutely be going back for the beignets.
Grab a couple of donuts to go and head towards your next adventure.
A Scenic Morning Walk: Carmel Meadows Trail
With your coffee and donuts in hand, make your way to Carmel Meadows Trail. This coastal trail offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and is an ideal spot for a morning walk with your dog. The trail is well-maintained and relatively easy, making it suitable for dogs of all sizes and energy levels. As you walk along the .6 mi path, take in the fresh sea breeze and enjoy the sight of waves crashing against the rugged coastline. Remember to keep your dog on a leash and bring some waste bags to clean up after them. Parking is free within the neighborhood with a few spots available at the trailhead.
I like starting our walk on the trail and circling back to the trailhead on the beach. There are steps you can take from the beach that connect you to the lower trail and trailhead, so it’s easy to make this walk as short or as long as you’d like.
Brunch on the Patio: Stationæry
After working up an appetite from your walk, head over to Stationæry for their daily brunch. This chic eatery offers a dog-friendly patio where you and your pup can relax and enjoy a meal together. The menu features a range of delicious options, from avocado toast to hearty breakfast burritos. Don’t forget to order something from their special dog menu to treat your furry companion. There is street parking available near the restaurant and I’d recommend a reservation. This restaurant is no longer a hidden gem.
Bike 17-Mile Drive with a Rental from Mad Dogs & Englishmen
Next, rent a bike from Mad Dogs & Englishmen and explore the famous 17-Mile Drive. This scenic route offers breathtaking views of the coastline, forests, and iconic landmarks. Their bikes come equipped with sidecars for your dog and they provide helmets and goggles for your dog. Parking is free at the rental shop and also available on the street. I’d recommend a reservation, especially on weekends. Rental prices range from $25-$45 per hour depending on your total rental duration.
There’s usually an entrance fee for the 17-mile drive, but bikers have free access to it from sunrise to sunset.
This scenic route takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the area, including the stunning Pebble Beach. Make sure to pull off at the various stops along the drive to take in the views and let your dog stretch their legs.
Highlights include:
Spanish Bay: A picturesque beach renowned for its crashing waves and serene ambiance. Dogs are not allowed on the beach, but it’s a beautiful view.

Sunset Walk on Carmel Beach
As you wrap up the day, head to Carmel Beach for a sunset walk. This dog-friendly beach is a beloved spot for both locals and visitors. The soft, white sand and gentle waves create a perfect setting for a relaxing stroll. Let your dog run free off-leash, play fetch, or simply enjoy the serene atmosphere as the sun sets over the horizon. The sky’s changing colors and the calming sound of the ocean provide a beautiful backdrop to reflect on your perfect day in Carmel.
things to Consideration when planning your day
Timing: If you don’t have time for a full day of activities, Carmel Beach is an absolute must so I’d recommend trading this for one of the activities earlier in the day to ensure your pup gets to put their paws in the sand at the dog-friendliest beach in the country.
Leash Requirements: Keep your dog on a leash in public areas and respect local leash laws.
Water and Snacks: Bring water and snacks for your dog, especially if you plan to be out for an extended period.
Waste Bags: Carry waste bags and clean up after your pet to keep the town clean and dog-friendly.
Weather: Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. Coastal areas can be cooler, so bring a light jacket and expect fog in the summer. If you ‘re dying for coastal views, plan those activities later in your day.
Reservations: Make reservations at restaurants in advance, especially during peak times, to ensure dog-friendly seating is available.
