Nestled along California's stunning central coast, Carmel-by-the-Sea is a picturesque fairytale town that beckons dog lovers and their furry companions. With its charming streets, breathtaking beaches, and an array of pet-friendly establishments, Carmel offers an unforgettable getaway where your four-legged friend is as welcome as you are. Whether you're strolling through the quaint village, dining at dog-friendly restaurants, or exploring scenic trails and the coastline, this guide will outline the best that Carmel has to offer for you and your dog.
how to get to carmel-by-the-sea
Carmel-by-the-Sea, often simply called Carmel, is a picturesque coastal town in California known for its stunning scenery and charming village atmosphere. If you're driving from Northern California, take the scenic Highway 1 down the coast from San Francisco, which takes about 2.5 hours. The drive offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and passes through several coastal towns. From Southern California, head north on Highway 101, then transition to Highway 1 at San Luis Obispo for a beautiful, albeit longer, coastal route. This journey from Los Angeles takes around 6 hours. Alternatively, you can fly into Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), just 15 minutes from Carmel. The airport is serviced by several major airlines, making it a convenient option for travelers from further afield. From the airport, a short taxi or rental car ride will bring you to the heart of Carmel.
Carmel’s weather: What to expect and what to pack
Carmel enjoys a mild, Mediterranean climate year-round, making it an attractive destination no matter the season. Summers are typically warm but not hot, with temperatures averaging between 60°F and 70°F (15°C to 21°C). Light layers, a hat, and sunscreen are recommended for the daytime, while a light jacket or sweater is ideal for cooler evenings. This is peak season for the area so expect more crowds and higher prices. What surprises people the most is how foggy it can be on the California coast during summer. The fog can be very unpredictable and sometimes burns off in the afternoons and other times it sticks around from sunrise to sunset. In the fall, temperatures remain pleasant, though it can start to get chillier, especially at night. Winter months, from December to February, bring cooler temperatures ranging from 50°F to 60°F (10°C to 15°C) and occasional rain. During this time, it's wise to pack a warm coat, waterproof shoes, and an umbrella. Spring sees a gradual warming, with temperatures again climbing into the 60s, and a mix of sunny and overcast days. Layered clothing is ideal for this unpredictable weather. No matter when you visit, always bring comfortable walking shoes to navigate Carmel’s quaint, yet often uneven, cobblestone streets.
